CALIFORNIA STARS 18 AAA Head Coach Brent Agrusa Bio:

Brent is a Utica, Michigan Native with a proven track record in junior hockey. Agrusa’s teams have always been known for there high tempo, discipline, and high scoring offenses. Before getting into the junior circuit Agrusa coached AAA hockey for the Detroit Falcons and Belle Tire Organizations. Agrusa has numerous players from those teams playing NCAA Division I, Minor Pro and in the NHL. In the late 1990′s he took over a CSHL Metro Jets team that was in last place but would become contenders within one season. In his second season Agrusa led the Jets to a 24-1 record before moving to Kentucky. Agrusa moved over (11) players to Division I & III NCAA Colleges, Pro Hockey and Tier II Junior A hockey during this tenure with the Jets. Agrusa also scouted for the Rochester Americans & Capital Center Pride of the NAHL during this time.

He then coached for two years in Louisville, Kentucky where he guided the Mid South Storm Midget AAA to a second place finish in the MNHL and was the General Manager of the Pantherland Ice Arena which was the practice facility for the former Louisville Panthers of the AHL. Agrusa once again continued his commitment to advancing players having (6) players from the Storm commit to NCAA DIII Colleges, USHL and NAHL squads.

In 2002 Agrusa was named Head Coach of the Helena Bighorns of the AWHL/NAHL and tasked with turning the franchise around. Agrusa took over a squad that was 11 games under .500 in November. The Bighorns improved throughout his first season making remarkable strides finishing the regular season 29-26-1, and made a statement in the playoffs, sweeping a series with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs, eventually losing in game seven of the semifinal round to the Billings Bulls. Helena made the playoffs in each of the following two seasons as well, and was one of the NAHL league leaders in scoring and one of it’s least penalized team. Agrusa compiled over 100 victories in his three seasons in Helena and moved over (30) players to NCAA Division III Colleges, (18) players to NCAA Division I Colleges, and (5) players to Minor Professional Hockey. Agrusa has also been instrumental helping (15) of his former Helena players break into Pro hockey since graduating from college. Agrusa also served on the Board of Governors of the North American Hockey League, and was an Owner of the Queen City Cutthroats of the Norpac during that time period. The 2005-06 season Agrusa was out of hockey with some major health problems. Unfortunately for Agrusa the Western Division of the NAHL ceased operations so he would not return back to Helena.

In 2006 Coach Agrusa jumped back in to coaching by starting an entire junior program in Chesapeake, Virginia where he served as General Manager, and Head Coach. In his first season, he guided the Hampton Roads Whalers Junior B team to a 35-0-5 record, CHA Regular Season and Playoff Championships and the only undefeated junior team in the Country. The 2007-2008 season the Whalers formed a new Independent Junior A team, travelling across North America playing teams from the NAHL, EJHL, AJHL, OPJHL and others in an exhibition schedule. They ended the season with a 41-19-4 record. The Junior Whalers B team was again impressive as well, posting a 29-2-3 regular season record and another playoff championship. Agrusa again demonstrated his ability to move players on to the NCAA ranks moving (12) players to NCAA Schools, and (4) players to Tier I and II Junior A hockey. Agrusa also had one of his former Whaler Players Radoslav Illo drafted by the Anaheim Ducks of the NHL. With Agrusa’s leadership the Whaler program was put on the map as a premier Junior Program on the East Coast.

Agrusa returned to the NAHL for the 2008/09 season taking over the last place Kenai River Brown Bears. In one season Agrusa led the Brown Bears to more wins then its first season, and to this date the most in franchise history, despite being one of the youngest teams in the NAHL. Agrusa once again demonstrated his ability to move players having the first player in Brown Bears history commit to a NCAA Division I School, he also had the first player in team history to be on the NHL central scouting list, and took them to their first ever playoff appearance. Continuing his relentless commitment to helping players advance their careers the Brown Bears had (6) of his former players commit to NCAA Division III schools, and (3) to NCAA Division I Schools. The end of the 2008-09 season once again saw Agrusa run into some unfortunate health issues having major surgery.

The 2009-10 season would see Agrusa have to scale back after his surgery. Considering taking the season off he was asked by long time friend Ken Moyseyev to come to California and coach the California Stars 18 AAA team, he accepted. The Stars began the season with only one player with any midget major experience. The Stars sported one of the youngest rosters in AAA hockey, and struggled in the early part of the season. The second half of the season would see the Stars start to generate success both on and off the ice. The on ice success would start with a tournament championship in Salt Lake City. The Off Ice success would show once again Agrusa’s commitment to helping players advance. The Stars would have (4) players sign at the Junior A level in the North American Hockey League, and (1) player commit to play NCAA Division III College hockey at Becker College.

The 2010-11 season will see Agrusa returning for a second season with the 18 AAA California Stars. Agrusa’s 15 year career has seen him help over 100 players move on to NCAA Div I & III Colleges, and Pro teams. He has served as a General Manager, Head Coach, Board of Governor, Owner and Scout at the Junior level. His record and experience will give the 18AAA stars players the opportunity to advance their careers.

California Stars 2010-2011 Midget 16AAA Team

The California Stars are pleased to announce continuation of our Tier I program and our plans to field a Midget 16AAA team for the 2010-2011 season. Our objective is to roster a competitive Midget 16AAA team capable of winning a state title, advancing to the Pacific District championships and beyond. Last year’s team was the CAHA runner-up and advanced to Districts; we will return a core group of 1994 and 1995 birth year players and look forward to another productive season. This team will require a high level of commitment and strong work ethic from players. Our goal is to provide them the necessary skills development, physical conditioning and national level exposure to advance to 18AAA, junior and collegiate hockey.

We have assembled an outstanding staff for the 2010-2011 season led by returning Head Coach Rob O’Rourke and Assistant Coach Alex Semenov. We are also pleased to add veteran Tier coaches Chris Annunziato and Andy Newton to the roster as Assistants. Our home ice facility, Ontario Center Ice Arena, is among the best in southern California and offers an ideal location for Tier I level players in the Inland Empire and throughout southern California. The Stars organization is a proven winner; over the past five seasons our Tier teams have won five California state championships, three Pacific District titles and one National championship.

Try-Out Schedule and Format

We invite top Tier players to attend our try-outs and meet our staff and club officials. Try-outs for the Stars 2010-2011 Midget 16AAA team will be held at Center Ice Arena located at 201 S. Plum Street, Ontario, CA 91761 on the following dates and times. We will use a scrimmage format for all try-outs. The cost is $25 per session or $60 for all three. For additional information on the try-outs contact Team Manager Rob Freeman at 213 705-5251 or robertbfreeman@aol.com.

Coaches and Support Staff

Our Midget 16AAA program is highly competitive. We expect to attract top level ’94 and ’95 birth year players. Our coaching staff has more than twenty years combined Tier level hockey experience with a national title, three Pacific District championships and numerous state banners to our record. We are proud to announce the following line-up of coaches for the program.

Head Coach: Rob O’Rourke

Coach O’Rourke boasts a long and impressive resume as a youth hockey coach. Rob has coached youth hockey since 1997 and served as head coach for the Jets, Senators, LA Hockey, Wave, and Stars organizations. He coached the 2007-2008 Stars Bantam AA team that advanced to the CAHA Championship Series, the 2008-2009 Stars Midget 16AA team that advanced to the CAHA Playdown Weekend Series, and last year’s Stars 16AAA team that finished as CAHA runner-up and advanced to the Pacific District Championships. He also served as Assistant Coach for the 2005-2006 National Champion Wave Bantam AAA team and the 2006-2007 Pacific District Champion LA Selects Midget 16AAA team. Rob’s extensive experience with winning Tier programs and numerous contacts with junior and collegiate hockey programs will help our players succeed this season and advance to the next level.

Assistant Coach: Chris Annunziato

Coach Annunziato is co-owner of the Stars Hockey Club and has more than 15 years experience as a youth hockey coach with the Ontario/Riverside Jets, Ontario Senators, Los Angeles Jr. Kings, LA Hockey Club and the California Stars. He served as Head Coach of the 2008-2009 Stars 16AAA team and the 2007-2008 16AA team. He was Assistant Coach for the National Champion 2006-2007 Stars Bantam AA team and has won numerous SCAHA and CAHA championships from the Mite to the Midget Tier level. His experience is matched only by his passion for the game and his proven record as a winner. We are very excited to have Chris return to our Tier I program and look forward to his partnership with Coach O’Rourke.

Assistant Coach: Andy Newton

The Stars are pleased to have Coach Newton join our staff. Andy has been a fixture on the local youth hockey scene for several years. He established himself through the Newton Hockey program at Riverside Ice Town and as Head Coach of the Inland Valley Wild Bantam AA and Midget 16AA teams. Last season Coach Newton headed the California Wave Midget 16AAA team. We look forward to working with Andy at Ontario and to his contributions toward the 2010-2011 Stars 16AAA squad.

Assistant Coach: Alex Semenov

We are happy to have Coach Semenov return to our staff this year. He played youth hockey in southern California, learning from his father, ex-NHL player and Stars/Center Ice owner Tony Semenov. Alex went on to play junior hockey for the Springfield Junior Blues of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) and the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (USHL). Alex then spent three seasons playing professional hockey in the Russian Elite League. He brings strong fundamentals and individual skills to the team and looks to continue to Semenov tradition of player education and development.

Team Trainer: Paul Nix

The Stars are pleased to announce that Paul Nix from Iron Works Gym in Claremont, CA will return as our physical conditioning coach for the 2010-2011 season. Paul is an intense trainer who will provide our players with a comprehensive and demanding physical training and nutritional program.

Team Manager: Rob Freeman

With more than a decade of experience managing teams from Mite B to Midget 18AAA, Rob is known for his organizational and communications skills. Parents and players will always know where the team is going, what it’s going to cost and how we’re going to get there. He has served with the Sun Devils, Coyotes, Senators and Stars organizations and is currently club president for the California Stars. Rob served as Team Manager for the Stars 2007-2008 18AAA team under Head Coach Tony Semenov with a core group of players that had been together for four seasons, and as Team Manager for the 2009-2010 Stars 16AAA squad.

Program Cost

Annual dues are $5200 (8 payments of $650), which covers practices, home games, away games, coaches salaries, off-ice conditioning and registration for three travel tournaments. In order to assist with the total program cost, the Stars have an aggressive, proactive fund raising effort underway to offset the cost of out-of-state travel expenses.

Regular Season On and Off-Ice Practices

We will have on-ice practices three times a week and off-ice conditioning sessions two times a week. Specific days and hours are being set and will be announced shortly. This schedule will not apply to holiday weeks and is subject to adjustment due to tournament travel dates.

Schedule of Games

We anticipate playing approximately 50 games this season with 12 home games, 12 local away games, five major elite 16AAA tournaments, one 18AA tournament (Hat Trick Classic – Ontario) and additional Pacific District road games. We expect CAHA to continue its rule change to require Tier I teams to play each other a minimum of three times during the season. The season will run from August 2009 through February 2010 depending on playoffs.
